Programmatic areas

Realistic Planning for Education and Careers
Guiding young people through a process of reflection on their desired future careers and the decisions they need to make to achieve their goals.

Self-Esteem
Inculcating in the youth the understanding that they are unique and a gift from God to the world, and encouraging them to value others as they do themselves.

Gender Equality and Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Young people are encouraged to treat everyone equally and respectfully, whether they are boys/men or girls/women, and to support victims of sexual violence and/or harassment.

Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWD)
At the core of the Young Samaritan Programme, PWD are involved in planning and implementing activities at a national level. To act as a Young Samaritan is to assure that everyone is included and valued and can make use of the talents God has given them.

Communication Between Parents/Guardians and Youth
Providing advice on how to improve two-way communication and the overall relationship between parents/guardians and their teenagers.

Critical Thinking, Misinformation and Radicalisation
Educating young people on responsible online behaviour, including advice on how to handle fake news and ‘influencer’, and how to protect oneself from radical ideologies and political violent movements.

Community Life and Migration
This involves providing guidance on how to become involved in positively changing things and situations in their community, as well as the consequences of both legal and illegal migration.

Raising awareness of the causes and consequences of climate change, and exploring ways in which young people can help to preserve the future of the planet.

YSP and the global Development agenda
The Young Samaritan Program (YSP) aligns with the global development agenda by focusing on several key areas, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and regional priorities like the UN Youth Strategy (Youth2030) and the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063.
Alignment with SDGs

Quality Education (SDG 4)
By equipping young people with knowledge and skills for economic development and future employment, the YSP directly supports SDG 4’s aim to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning.
Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3)
YSP’s emphasis on sexual and reproductive health education and community health initiatives contributes to SDG 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.
Gender Equality (SDG 5)
By addressing gender-based violence and promoting gender equality, YSP aligns with SDG 5, which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
The YSP’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly concerning persons with disabilities, resonates with SDG 10’s objective to reduce inequality within and among countries.
Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)
The YSP involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including governments, NGOs and community leaders. This directly supports SDG 17, which focuses on strengthening the means of implementation and revitalising the global partnership for sustainable development..
Alignment with
the UN Youth Strategy (Youth2030)

Empowering and engaging youth meaningfull
This entails promoting youth empowerment and participation at all levels. The YSP’s community engagement and youth leadership initiatives contribute directly to this goal.
Advancing knowledge and enhancing capacities for working with and for youth
This requires strengthening the capacities of institutions and stakeholders by improving their access to data, evidence, tools and knowledge, in order to promote evidence-based policies and cross-sectoral programming. YSP’s educational and capacity-building efforts support this goal.
Alignment with
the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063

Aspiration 1: A Prosperous Africa based on Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development
This includes goals for a high standard of living, quality of life and well-being for all, with a specific focus on ending poverty, addressing youth unemployment, and providing quality education and healthcare. YSP’s work in health, education, and community well-being directly supports these objectives.
Aspiration 6: An Africa Whose Development is people-driven, relying on the potential offered by African People, especially its Women and Youth, and caring for Children
This aspiration specifically calls for engaged and empowered youth and children, and full gender equality in all spheres of life. YSP’s youth empowerment, gender equality, and community engagement initiatives are directly in line with this aspiration.
Aspiration 7: Africa as A Strong, United, Resilient and Influential Global Player and Partner
This aspiration aims for Africa to take full responsibility for financing its own development, which can be supported by youth-led innovation and economic contributions promoted by programs like YSP.
